A post-apocalyptic world needs to make sense. If “X” happens, then “Y” should logically follow. If some crazy global biological disaster creates deadly monsters wiping out humans, leaving only a few scattered survivors, then modern conveniences like supply chains and services are gone.
If you’re just trying to survive, how important is washing your hair regularly when water and shampoo are limited? Or shaving every day with razors that will eventually run out? These little details matter.
So when a movie’s production design ignores its own logic, it ruins the immersion. At least for me. But I work in TV production, so I notice these things.
Why do the main characters have salon-fresh haircuts? Why do the teens have perfect, straight white teeth when no dentists are around? They tried to make some clothes look worn—by slapping duct tape on a few jackets—but most outfits still looked brand new. One character, a mother, wore a bright white turtleneck that looked like it just came off a GAP store shelf. Fifteen years of struggling for survival, and not a single stain?
And if ammo is super rare, why waste bullets just to teach a kid a “lesson” for stealing medicine to help his injured father? Wouldn’t a good old-fashioned beating do the job if punishment was really needed? Shouldn’t bullets be saved for when the monsters actually attack?
Speaking of attacks—why do these monsters only go after humans but leave livestock alone? If they’re some kind of human-wolf hybrid mutants hunting anything in sight, why do the sheep get a free pass?
If you just want to shut off your brain and watch something mindless, maybe this film is fine. But if you’re looking for something that actually makes sense, don’t expect much.
